Vijay Tendulkar (1928 – 2008) is one of India’s finest contemporary playwrights, and Kamla, written originally in Marathi in 1981, is one of his best known plays. Kamla was inspired by a real-life incident. At the center of the play is a self-seeking journalist, Jaisingh Jadhav, who treats the woman he has purchased from the flesh market as an object that can buy him a promotion in his job and a reputation in his professional life.
