Hayavadana (meaning “horse-face”), is the story of three protagonists – the wise Devadatta, the well-built Kapila, and the beautiful Padmini, who is married to Devadatta and worshipped by Kapila. After the men behead themselves in a show of love and sacrifice, the Goddess Kali brings them back to life but Padmini gets their heads mixed up. Which one of them is her husband now? The play is based on Thomas Mann’s The Transposed Heads, which in turn was based on the Sanskrit text Kathasaritsagara.
