In 2011, a gay teenager hangs himself, while fighting a losing battle against bullying. Caught in the storm is Nandita Joshi (Nancy), for whom the incident triggers dark memories from decades ago. As a sheltered student, Nandita helplessly watched her best friend meet a similar fate. Twenty five years later, married to the controlling Kailash, Nandita is confronted by another bully, her very own son whom she suspects is partially responsible for the teen’s death. SAFE is written by Donna Hoke, a New York Times-published crossword puzzle constructor, children’s book author, and award-winning ensemble playwright at Road Less Traveled Productions. Her work has been seen in 27 US states, and on five continents. SAFE was a finalist in Naatak’s inaugural playwrighting contest, inkpot@naatak.
